Philadelphia Cancels All Public Events Through February 2021

Officials in Philadelphia announced they will be canceling all large public gatherings until February 28, 2021, because of the coronavirus pandemic.

"Today, I am really disappointed to announce that we will have a moratorium on large public events through February 28, 2021," Mayor Jim Kenney said. "The city's office of special events will not accept, review, process, or approve applications, issue permits, or enter into agreements for special events or public gatherings of 50 people or more on public property through the end of February."

The city did not announce any specific events that would be canceled, but local media reports the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, Philadelphia Marathon, and the Mummers Parade on New Year's Day would likely be postponed.

The order does not apply to protests or other demonstrations that are protected by the First Amendment. Officials said that stadiums and concert venues would be allowed to hold events, but the operators must follow all social distancing guidelines laid out by state health officials.
